In order for Rocaltrol to be effective there are several things you need to be aware of: |
|
|
◊ |
You need to be receiving an adequate daily intake of calcium, at least 600
milligrams
per day. [The US R.D.A. (required daily amount) in adults is 800 milligrams to 1200 milligrams.] The amount of
supplemental calcium that you take should be discussed with your doctor. |
|
|
◊ |
Be sure to discuss beforehand any current or planned vitamin or nutritional supplement regimens with your physician in order to avoid excess doses of vitamin D while on Rocaltrol therapy. |
|
|
◊ |
If you are a
dialysis
patient on Rocaltrol therapy, your physician may discuss with you the need for a
low-phosphate diet
and a
non-aluminum phosphate-binding compound. |
|
|
◊ |
Also, if you are a dialysis patient on Rocaltrol therapy, avoid consuming
OTC
preparations containing magnesium such as
antacids, because use of these could lead to an unhealthy build up of magnesium in your system. |
